Skiing is just the tip of the iceberg –  there are a myriad of alternative outdoor adventures to enjoy by day and night. Avoriaz caters for all ages, so for your full winter holiday experience come and try your hand at one of these other exciting activities!

Mountain walks are a fantastic way to experience the splendour of the Alps, which are at their most magical during winter and are a great activity for non-skiers. They offer the opportunity to closely encounter the local flora and fauna and you will likely discover animal tracks left in the snow while enjoying the 360 degree panoramas. Avoriaz offers lots of options for hiking around the slopes, so it is very easy for skiers and hikers to rendezvous on the slopes for lunch.

SNOWSHOEING

For a different slope experience why not try snowshoeing? An easy activity allowing you to traverse the deeper snow on foot. Great for non-skiers. Snowshoes can be rented from the ski hire shops for exploring by yourself or you can joint a group with a guide at the ESF and the equipment is provided. Snowshoeing hiking routes are open to all, adults and children of all levels.

PARAPENTING

If you would like to soar over the Alps like the Choucas, why not try parapenting, a tandem parachute flight with a qualified pilot, launching by running off the side of the mountain, catching the thermal and soaring up into the air. Offering unparalleled aerial views and excitement, parapenting is yet another adventure experience on offer and easily accessible in Avoriaz.

SCENIC HELICOPTER FLIGHTS

For a change from ski-ing with fantastic views over the top of the Alpine peaks, why not enjoy a helicopter flight under the skilful control of an expert mountain pilot?

IGLOO VILLAGE

Avoriaz has its very own igloo complete with ice bar and accommodation where you can even sleep the night! Perched on the Stade slope just above the Place jean Vuarnet, and accessible both by ski or on foot, the igloo comprises a network of beautifully carved and majestically lit tunnels and rooms with an outside daytime seating area in the sunshine.

SLEDGING

Avoriaz is a Mecca for sledging. Whether young or old, being a car-free resort offers unlimited opportunities for sledging and as evening draws and the slopes empty of skiers, sledges take over the slopes. The Dromonts slopes in the centre of town offer particularly good sledge runs and the tourist office runs regular ski races for children.

NIGHT SLEDGING

For a great evening activity, let yourself speed in the dark down 700m vertical drop on the 3km descent from Avoriaz to Prodains under the careful guide of a qualified guide. SNOWMOBILING

As night falls, the snow fields appear mysterious. If you still have the energy, why not discover ski-doing? Driving your own electric snow motor bike through the forests and plateaus of Proclou on a guided tour. With friends, family, or alone, you will enjoy the freedom from driving a motorized vehicle without roads through beautiful scenery.

KIDS SNOWMOBILING

It’s not just grown ups who enjoy adventure in Avoriaz, but the little ones too. Avoriaz has specially adapted electric snowmobiles for children from as young as five years to drive by themselves on a carefully secured snow track so kids can get their fill of thrill and fun too!

ICE SKATING

No ski resort would be complete without an ice rink. Avoriaz has an open air skating rink in the middle of the ski resort. Most suited to children, a variety of activities such as skate dance parties for kids are organised weekly by the local tourist office.

DOG SLEDDING OR MUSHING

Discover mushing – driving your own team of huskies pulling you along on a sled. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a tame ride on the back of a sledge – more of an adventure thrill sport combining adventure and balance while delighting at the enthusiasm and energy of the packs of vibrant huskies just raring to go!

HORSE DRAWN SLEIGH RIDES

What could be more magical than gliding along to the sound of jingle bells in a one horse open sleigh? Avoriaz is unique in the Alps in using horse sleighs as its main means of transport, so step aboard, snuggle under the rugs and enter your very own Christmas card as you are glide along the passageways through snow clad buildings and beautifully lit trees.

FAT BIKING

Cycling on the snow on bikes with super wide tyres is becoming an increasingly popular pursuit and is known as fat biking. It’s a great work out and if you’re a mountain biking enthusiast or ever wanted to give it a go, come and try Fat Biking, available early evening on the plateau.

ICE DIVING

For a complete change of scene, Lake Montriond offers the opportunity to go ice diving. Open to all, from beginners to experienced divers, over the age of 16. Supervised by qualified professionals, the experience includes all the equipment required – just bring warm clothes for afterwards!

AQUARIAZ WATER PARK

Enjoy 30°C in all of the pools, which have varying depths catering to keen swimmers in search of adventure, to those who just want to splash about. A water tree helps young children to discover the pleasures of water jets and waterslides. The more adventurous will enjoy the creepers and climbing wall, or the Slidewinder for a really exciting ride. The river’s gentle currents and massage bubbles, or the outdoor hot tub are the perfect places to relax.

BOWLING LE ROC STRIKE

The Avoriaz bowling alley has recently been completely re-furbished. Several bowling lanes are available in addition to arcade games and 2 billiard tables. The bar screens football matches and there is a restaurant lounge.

CINEMA LES PORTES DU SOLEIL

Avoriaz has its own cinema which offers a weekly changing schedule of movies comprising the latest blockbusters and offers films in both French and English with 2 -3 screenings per day.

SPA & WELLNESS

Why not treat those tired muscles to a massage at one of the 3 spas in Avoriaz? Choose from the Avoriaz Spa, Deep Nature Spa or Sowell Spa offering steam rooms, jacuzzies, relaxation areas and a wealth of face and body treatments from facials to deep tissue massage. Aqua fitness lesson ACTIVITÉS 45 minutes classes (+ 15 min of relaxation) at 10.30am from Monday to Friday. Yoga offers you an opportunity to stretch your ski legs at the end of the day and take maximum care of your body. Check out the weekly schedule locally for times of classes.

If you are looking to sport the latest fashions or the most technical equipment on the slopes this winter, then look no further. Avoriaz boasts a wealth of sports and equipment shops offering an excellent selection of ski and board clothing and equipment so there’s no excuse for not being the coolest dude on the mountain.

DELICATESSANS

Aside from sports shops, Avoriaz has a number of delicatessens boasting regional specialities such as local saucisson, raclette and fondue cheese and local wines. Enjoy uttering and tasting during your stay or a perfect souvenir of your holiday to take home.
